CRA Updates

CRA recently released the following updates relevant to registered charities:
- CRA has begun the process of retiring its fax line which emphasizes the need for registered charities and non-profit organizations to ensure they have access to their MyBusiness account to receive correspondence from CRA and to provide correspondence to CRA. We have heard of many organizations who have missed important notices, deadlines, and other correspondence from CRA due to failure to have one or more individuals monitoring the MyBusiness account.
- CRA has notified the sector that it will no longer provide pre-approval for changes to charities purposes and activities. Previously, CRA would provide such pre-approval which would allow for charities to have some comfort regarding compliance for new purpose language and new activities. This recent development unfortunately shifts the burden on charities to ensure compliance when developing new purposes and activities without input and confirmation from CRA.
