As you are likely aware, in response to the disruptions caused by the Canada Post mail stoppage, the Government of Canada announced on December 30, 2024 that it intends to amend the Income Tax Act to extend the deadline for making donations eligible for tax support in the 2024 tax year, until February 28, 2025.

We are pleased to see that the government has now provided some clarity on this proposal by releasing draft legislation to amend the Income Tax Act to extend the deadline for making donations eligible for tax support in the 2024 tax year to February 28, 2025. Concurrently, CRA also provided clarification regarding its approach to administering the proposed 2024 legislation. Neither of these announcements means that these proposed amendments are in effect, but it is a helpful step in this direction and addresses some of the uncertainty during this interim period.
